When compressing classical audio files with Audacity to play in the cab, threshhold -24db, ratio 3:1, attack time 0.1 seconds seems to get good results.

primitive music is timeless.
later music stakes out territory in time through the use of motifs and transitions, like a sonata or a fugue.
programmatic music relates those motifs and transitions to real or imagined places and events.
So a typical jazz performance of "C Jam Blues" is almost timeless. A jazz performance of "The Mooche" stakes out territory with a theme, modulation, second theme and modulation back.
